How to achieve a perfectly organized garage

You need to store the patio furniture but the garage is overflowing? Here are garage organization tips!

Step 1: Make room for change

You need to see the whole floor, that’s the rule. You’ll have a better view of everything you own and of what needs to get done.

Lay an old canvas sheet in front of your garage and take out all the items from the garage; you might find little treasures that have been lost under the pile of clutter!

  1. Start by thoroughly cleaning every inch of your garage, from the floor to the windows and ceiling.
  2. Once the dirt and dust has disappeared, make a mental plan of the space you need. Organize the space thematically: the pool corner, the tool corner, the bike corner, etc.

Step 2: Sort and separate

What will you keep, give, sell, or throw away? At this point, it’s important to sort and set into plies.

  1. To avoid any bickering and misunderstandings, get your children involved. Under your supervision, they’ll decide whether to keep or get rid of toys, clothes, and sports equipment.
  2. While the little ones are busy, take care of more important items, such as his tools or her mountain of “just in case” items. Be logical: if you’d forgotten that you owned an object, give it away or sell it.
  3. Put aside everything that’s in good condition. Some of your unwanted items might be worth something to someone else!
  4. Don’t forget that toxic waste such as leftover paint, used batteries, and electronic scraps require special care when you dispose of them. Find out what collection facilities are available in your area.

Step 3: Organize and tidy up

If some of your friends or family members are huge Tetris fans, it’s time to invite them over for dinner in exchange for a few hours of their time. According to the plans you made earlier, start organizing your space.

  1. Store things you won’t be using this winter in containers, making sure to clearly label the contents.
  2. Hang tools out of reach of children.
  3. If you need to store chemical products, install shelves high up to place them on so that children will not see them nor be able to access them. Otherwise, hide them in an area, inaccessible to children.

Stop thinking and start doing; now’s the time! Take advantage of these last days of nice fall weather to reorganize your garage. Once spring arrives and you’re busy reopening your pool and taking care of your lawn, you’ll thank yourself.
