A turn-key(less) driving experience

In 2009, articles about the ‘exciting future of the car key’ started appearing all over the web. Young inventors and big companies alike were on the verge of replacing the traditional ignition key with a new, more intuitive and multifunctional technology; or so it was reported. And now that prediction has come true: here are three apps for a keyless car.

Today’s smartphones function as master keys and often as multifunctional key chains, which makes it easier for us to perform many car-related functions. Major car manufacturers are already on board — just think of Hyundai’s Blue Link or Chevrolet’s OnStar Remotelink. These two smartphone applications let you unlock your car, start it remotely and even, in Chevrolet’s case, send your itinerary to the car’s navigation system. These applications, which connect directly to Hyundai and Chevrolet’s onboard computers, are full featured, powerful and free (but require OnStar registration in the case of Chevrolet and Blue Link in Hyundai's). But what options are out there for other car brands? Here are three keyless applications worth checking out.

VIPERSMART START

The Vipersmart application bills itself as a product that can perform all the basic smart-key functions: unlocking doors automatically when you approach your vehicle and remotely opening the trunk or starting your car. The application uses your phone’s data connection to send commands, which means you can only use it when you have access to a 3G signal (so forget about using it while strolling in the woods or other remote locations). The application is free, but you’ll need to install the SmartStart system in your vehicle (at a cost ranging from $300 to $500, assuming you already subscribe to the Viper alarm system). You must also pay an annual fee, which varies depending on the chosen plan. Some functions are available without a subscription, but they are very basic. For example, car locating isn’t available without a subscription.

PROS

  • All basic functions, including remote starting, on a wide variety of car models.
  • Very dependable operating system.

CONS

  • 3G connection needed.
  • On the expensive side, given that you have to install the Viper system.

AUTONET MOBILE

Autonet Mobile is a fairly full-featured application that includes door and trunk unlocking, remote starting, vehicle locating and even a panic button for emergencies. In addition to these keyless functions, the application offers other attractive features, including car health reports, parental controls and a fuel-level monitor. Unlike the typical car manufacturer applications, which connect via 2G or satellite, Autonet combines the car’s operating system, smartphone software and Cloud services for greater efficiency. But it does need a connection via the Autonet Wifi Router, which will set you back a couple hundred dollars.

PROS

  • Free application.
  • Very fast (connects to the Internet in less than half a second).

CONS

  • Depends on Autonet Wifi Router.

BLUEID

The least-known keyless application, BlueID, is also the most promising. A technology originating in Germany, BlueID turns your phone into a digital key. While it replaces a car key and offers the same functionality as the two previous applications (including remote starting), it can also open garage doors or the gates of your regular parking facility. The different “keys” are adjustable, easy to transfer virtually to another user (when you share a car) and can even be programmed. The application offers geolocation, diagnostic testing and also works with iBeacons. These innovative functions make BlueID a comprehensive technology that is bound to spread widely in the coming years. It is not yet available in North America, but is a great example of evolving keyless technology.

PROS

  • Not limited to the car’s unlocking feature, it also taps into other vehicle systems.
  • Specialized in security management, so is highly reliable.

CONS

  • Not available yet on the BlueID website; available by contacting the company directly.
